6 Week Watercolour Course: One



In this course we explore a range of exercises to help you record what you can see using watercolour paint.

We will explore:

Drawing techniques
-
How to use colour
-
How to use tonal value
-
How to consider composition in your painting
​
You will learn in a supportive, social and peaceful environment. Our focus is on process , not outcome. We will consider art as a way to help us stay grounded in the present moment while developing skills to help us comfortably and confidently record our experiences of the present moment.

All materials will be provided. Every session will include a break with tea and home-made cakes.
By joining this course you will gain access to an online platform where you can access notes, upload artwork and continue the conversation with your fellow artists.

You will be equipped with the tools you need to continue your own sketchbook practice and will be ready to go deeper into your practice with the Six Week Watercolour Painting Course: Two

What to expect
How will I be taught?
You will be taught through:

demonstration of drawing and painting methods

A series of exercises designed to increase skill and confidence

By drawing from life, using still-life props.

Group discussion and individualised feed-back

Through the study of watercolour paintings , such as those by Sargent

Accessing notes and additional content on the online platform
Aims of each session
Session One
-Explore the range of marks that can be achieved with watercolour paint
- Explore how an awareness of compositional shape can aid a painting
- Explore how to translate a set of objects into a drawing.
Session Two
-Explore how shadow shapes can order a drawing
- Explore the role of light and dark on local colours
- Explore how abstraction can help in observational drawing or painting.
Session Three
-Explore colour in greater depth
- Explore how colour can order a composition

Session Four
-Explore how colour can be used within a tonal scheme
- Explore how colour can communicate lighting conditions
Session Five
-Explore the role of found, lost, soft and hard edges within a composition
Session Six
- Explore the role of brush-stroke and ideas of brevity and economy of brushstroke.
After the course
After this course, which will primarily use still-life, you may like to join course Two to explore portraiture, the figure (working from clothed models) and interiors.

You may also like to join a workshops or one-off session. These run sporadically and explore a range of subjects, including Life Drawing, Plein-Air and Drawing in the Gallery
